You know P6

Your XER in PC.o in five stops: Full mode on the Advanced engine and the option block you would check first (progressed activities, critical, total float, the lag calendar); a link typed in one go with the four types and lag drawn; Details, the driving tick and the activity types; the file's calendars, resources and cash flow curves; earned value against a baseline that is a whole schedule; and back to P6 as XER or P6 XML, with the planned dates from the active baseline. Each stop names the short entry that covers it.

You know P6, so this is the short tour: your XER, the settings you expect, and a few things you will not have met.

First stop: open it. Same file, a new window, and the settings where you would look for them. The XER's pencil opens it in its own window, to try things out. See Open a schedule.

Full mode on the Advanced engine, and a headline: critical count, negative float, finish, cost and indices. And it is Fixed: nothing reschedules until you press F9, which may feel familiar.

Schedule, Schedule options: the settings you would check first sit on the Engine tab. The Advanced engine behaves similarly to P6 in retained logic, lag calendars, total float and the longest path.

Progressed activities: Retained Logic, Progress Override or Actual Dates. This file keeps Retained Logic. Critical by total float or by longest path; total float at the finish, the start, or the smaller.

And the calendar a lag counts on. See Options: Auto, Fixed and the engine block. Second stop: links, the way you type them. If you know the IDs, a link is one short line.

Add a link in one go: the ID, the type, the lag. See Links by shorthand. You know the four types. Finish-to-start first: the second starts as the first finishes.

Start-to-start, and they begin together; finish-to-finish, and they end together. Start-to-finish is the rare one, and reads backwards because it is.

A plus is a lag, and the second waits. A minus is a lead, and the two overlap. On Advanced, Details opens as a bottom pane, its tabs along the top.

Details, Predecessors: every link with its type and lag, and a tick on the one driving the date. Four activity types, level of effort among them. See Milestones and activity types.

Third stop: calendars and resources, each in its own menu, where you would expect them. Calendars, This schedule's calendars: every calendar the file brought, with hours and holidays. See Calendars.

Edit opens one: its working week, hour by hour, and its count of non-working days. And the year itself: a click on a day makes it working or not.

Resources: the file's own, with price and Max units per day. See Resources and assignments. Cash flow curves spread an assignment's cost over its time: front, back, bell. See Curves and periods.

Fourth stop: earned value. It needs a baseline, and here a baseline is a whole schedule you can open. Save as keeps your edits as a PC.o Schedule, and pins the upload itself as its baseline.

Schedule, Baselines: As uploaded, pinned as received and active. Nothing is copied into this schedule. Add a baseline pins any other schedule at a revision: last month's update, say.

CPI and SPI sit in the headline, read against that baseline. Resources, Cost summary: budget, planned, earned and actual by WBS. See Earned value against the baseline.

Last stop: back to P6. Everything you changed leaves as a file it can read. Back to P6 the way it came: File, Export, XER or P6 XML.

Conversion log is for a file that switched engine. This one never did, so it waits, greyed. Planned dates in the file come from the active baseline, or the schedule's own. See Exports and print.

Downloaded: the file, and a note of where its planned dates came from.

That is your XER in PC.o. Every stop has its own short entry. Next in the Guide: the library.
