Updating progress yourself

When you are the one with the facts: move the data date, mark what is done, type actual dates, suspend and resume an activity.

When you are the one who knows what happened on site, here is how to tell the schedule: move the date, mark the work.

Set data date: the new date, and the Spotlight, which shows what should have happened by then. The spotlight lists the activities between the old date and the new one. Then you decide.

The same command lives in Schedule, Update progress, and stays greyed unless a spotlight is up. Update progress marks them as planned: finished ones complete, those under way started.

Edit, Undo takes the whole update back in one step, for anyone who changes their mind. The Progress tab is the by-hand version: % complete, the actual dates, the remaining duration.

Forty percent done, so six days to go: % complete sets the remaining duration. The bar's dark part is the work done; the rest is remaining, and starts after the data date.

Suspend and resume mark a stop: two days with no work, so the finish moves two days. The data date line itself can be dragged: the spotlight follows it. Same choice, no dialog.

Move data date only shifts the date and leaves progress for you to enter. The data date moves, and a flash says so, with the new date: 16 November.

Late means total float below zero: the activities that now miss the finish, or a target. Progress goes forward: a finished activity refuses a lower percent until its actual finish is cleared.

When the people who know are elsewhere, ask them: that is the update process, the previous entry.

That was progress. Next in the Guide: getting the schedule out, in XER, P6 XML, Excel and PDF, and the three-week look-ahead.
