The same P6 file in Full mode: the Advanced engine's options, four activity types, the longest path, and the exports that need it.

The Advanced engine behaves similarly to P6 in retained logic, lag calendars, activity types and longest path. In Full mode a schedule is Fixed, waiting for F9, or Auto, rescheduling after every change.

Advanced options are live, Standard ones greyed: progressed work, lag calendars, float, and what counts as critical. Retained logic: started early, EL 286 still waits for its predecessor, EL 287, and finishes 19 December.

Progress override: it carries on from the data date, finishing 5 December. Choose what your site does. Some rows are ticked Critical yet sit off the longest path, with float at zero or below.

The threshold is set in days: zero here, so only zero or negative float counts as critical. Or choose Longest Path: critical becomes the chain that sets the finish, whatever its float says.

Longest Path chosen: Critical and Longest path are ticked on the same rows, the chain setting the finish. Total float has three definitions here: finish float, start float, or the smaller of the two.

Start-to-start lags can count from the early start, or from the actual start, as you choose. A lag counts days on a calendar: Predecessor Activity, Successor Activity, 24 Hour, or Project Default.

Two switches: Use Expected Finish Dates, which is on, and Make open-ended activities critical, which is off. Must finish by sets a ceiling for the whole schedule: type a date, here 15 May 2020.

The schedule runs past it, so float goes negative: minus 15.0 days at the last milestone. Four types in Details, General: a task, a start or finish milestone, and level of effort.

Level of effort runs from the fourth to the fifteenth of March: the span of its two activities. Suspend 18 December, resume 20 December, in Details, Progress: its remaining finish now reads 21 December.

The finish moves to 21 December, and the bar stays in one piece, with no split drawn. On Advanced, Details is a bottom pane: General, Predecessors, Successors, Resources, Progress and more.

File, Export: XER and P6 XML are live here, because those files are written from the Advanced engine. Save as keeps it. Run analysis on the copy, and the dates reach PC.o's reports: the analysis entry.

Four scenarios, two engines, two modes. Next in the Guide: switching engines, with a change log and a way back.
